Empowering My Biomedical Career: A Journey Through the Practical Introduction to Transfusion Science (PITS) Course
As a Biomedical scientist, I have always placed a high value on professional development. It’s not just about staying current in my field; it’s about pushing myself to grow, learn, and refine my skills to provide the best possible care and service. This year, I made it a part of my New Year’s resolution to undertake a specialized course in blood transfusion science, and I’m thrilled to share my experience. From October 17–19, 2024, I completed the online theoretical component of the Practical Introduction to Transfusion Science (PITS) course, and on January 20–21, 2025, I attended the practical sessions at the NHSBT Scientific Training Laboratory in Tooting, London. This 5-day intensive course was a transformative experience, and I’m excited to take you through my journey.
The Practical Introduction to Transfusion Science (PITS) course was designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and practical techniques used in transfusion laboratories. The online sessions covered critical topics such as ABO and RhD grouping, antibody screening and identification, serological crossmatching, and the hazards of transfusion. These modules were incredibly detailed, offering a deep dive into red cell antigens and antibodies, pre-transfusion testing guidelines, and the provision of blood components. As someone who thrives on understanding the “why” behind the “how,” I found the theoretical foundation to be both challenging and rewarding. It reinforced my existing knowledge while introducing me to new concepts and techniques that are essential for working in a transfusion laboratory.
One of the highlights of the PITS course was the practical component, which took place at the NHSBT Scientific Training Laboratory in Tooting. This state-of-the-art facility provided the perfect environment to apply the knowledge I had gained during the online sessions. Over two intense days, I performed basic ABO and RhD grouping, antibody screening and identification, and serological crossmatching. The hands-on experience was invaluable, allowing me to interpret results, identify incompatible units, and understand the nuances of blood group serology techniques. The instructors were exceptional, offering guidance and feedback that helped me refine my skills and build confidence in performing these critical procedures.
