Health Screening for Chronic Diseases During the COVID-19 Pandemic

In March 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, my team at Vagicare Konsult partnered with the Star Light Foundation to organize a critical health screening in Suhum, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The pandemic had shed light on an alarming truth: individuals with chronic non-communicable diseases were particularly vulnerable to the virus. Motivated by the urgency of this issue, we set out to address these hidden health challenges and protect the most at-risk members of the community.

Our screening targeted individuals aged 50 and above, a demographic highly susceptible to both chronic illnesses and severe COVID-19 complications. The services provided included blood glucose testing, blood pressure checks, weight assessments, hemoglobin level analysis, and urine routine examinations to identify potential kidney issues. Each test was carefully selected to detect early signs of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and other chronic conditions that heightened COVID-19 vulnerability. This was not just about identifying illnesses but also about uncovering hidden health risks that many in the community were unaware of.

In addition to the screenings, we took the opportunity to educate the beneficiaries on the importance of regular health checks and how lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise play a significant role in managing chronic diseases. We discussed the risks associated with conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, and emphasized how managing these health issues could help reduce the likelihood of severe complications from COVID-19. Our aim was not just to diagnose but to empower the community with the knowledge and tools they needed to take charge of their health.

The outreach was not only about providing vital health services but also about fostering a culture of proactive health management. We distributed educational materials, provided dietary tips, and explained simple steps individuals could take to improve their health. This holistic approach encouraged individuals to think about their long-term health and consider how small, everyday choices could make a significant difference.

Executing this project in the midst of a pandemic was undoubtedly challenging. However, we remained steadfast and committed to our mission. We followed strict COVID-19 safety protocols, ensuring a safe environment for both the beneficiaries and our team. Everyone wore masks, practiced social distancing, and adhered to hand hygiene protocols to prevent the spread of the virus. The collaboration with Star Light Foundation was invaluable, enabling us to pool resources and expertise to make this initiative a reality and reach as many people as possible in such a challenging time.

By the end of the day, about 180 individuals had benefited from the screenings. For many, this was their first opportunity to assess their health and understand potential risks. Some had never had their blood pressure checked or their blood glucose levels tested before, making this outreach even more important. The gratitude and relief expressed by the community underscored the importance of the work we were doing. Many were shocked to learn of their health conditions but were thankful for the early detection and advice on managing their health moving forward. It was clear that this initiative had made a tangible difference in the lives of those we served, and many pledged to seek follow-up care after the screening.

The March 2021 health screening in Suhum exemplifies Vagicare Konsult’s commitment to community health, even during times of global crisis. It was a reminder that, regardless of the circumstances, our mission to improve lives and build healthier communities remains unwavering. This project reinforced our belief in the power of collaboration and innovation to overcome challenges and create lasting impact. More than just a screening event, this outreach was a step toward long-term health improvements for the community, and we remain hopeful that this initiative will inspire continued engagement with health services in Suhum and beyond.
