My Journey as a Biomedical Scientist: Where It Began

The University of Cape Coast holds a special place in my heart, not only as the institution where I completed my education in 2016 but also as the birthplace of my professional journey as a biomedical scientist. Upon graduation, I embarked on a year-long mandatory clinical internship at the University of Cape Coast Hospital. This chapter of my life was transformative, filled with challenges, triumphs, and invaluable lessons.
The internship was designed to provide immersive training across several laboratory departments, and I rotated through each with equal parts curiosity and determination. My days were structured, starting with sample reception. In the parasitology department, I delved into identifying parasites under microscopes, enhancing my understanding of the unseen world that affects human health. Immunology introduced me to antigen-antibody reactions, where I marveled at the complexities of the human immune system. Hematology taught me the nuances of blood cell analysis, and blood transfusion exposed me to the critical procedures that save lives daily. Each rotation brought its own set of challenges. Unpaid shifts became a routine part of my schedule, driven by my thirst for knowledge and the desire to excel. It was during these shifts that I experienced some of the most rewarding moments of my internship. One such highlight was joining the cholera prevention team. Under the mentorship of a senior biomedical scientist, I took part in an initiative to sample and culture food from the university community for cholera bacteria. This responsibility kept me on my toes, moving around daily to collect and process samples, isolate pathogens, and compile detailed reports.
The experience was both demanding and enriching. I honed my skills in culturing and isolating cholera bacteria, and through these activities, I gained profound insights into communication, teamwork, and leadership. Writing reports and presenting findings became second nature, bolstering my confidence in articulating complex scientific processes. Beyond the technical expertise, the networking opportunities were invaluable. Collaborating with seasoned professionals expanded my horizons and laid the groundwork for future opportunities.
Looking back, my internship at the University of Cape Coast Hospital was much more than a requirement; it was the crucible in which my career was forged. The challenges I faced, from the long hours in bacteriology to the dynamic pace of cholera prevention, shaped me into a resilient and resourceful scientist. By the time I applied for a full-time role, the experiences and references I had garnered made a compelling case for my readiness and capability.
Today, as I reflect on where it all began, I am grateful for the journey. The University of Cape Coast not only equipped me with academic knowledge but also provided the practical exposure and mentorship that set the foundation for a fulfilling career in biomedical science. Each department I rotated through contributed to the professional I am today, and the memories and lessons continue to inspire me as I navigate new challenges in this ever-evolving field.
